In the 1980s we took gay-friendly businesses as we could find them. It was exciting if a restaurant was gay, never mind whether its food was any good. Think the Arlington, Main Street Deli, Steak & Eggs, or the Westgate Denny's. When Blu Jeans came, it was a revelation. We still didn't patronize it much because they allowed smoking (always some damn thing).
The tea room gag? Fiction, as far as I know. Just a snide suggestion on how these proto-gay restaurants could improve their service. Obviously nobody went there for the food.
