(141) Murphy's Manor - The gay neighborhood

Oh, those raunchy homosexuals are at it again!

At the same time when our more Chic cousins on Christopher Street and Castro boasted of their vital Urban gay neighborhoods, Toledo had the old west end.

And while much good can be said about the old west end, the retail has never been much to mention. still isn't. (currently two small restaurants. Both pretty good)
The particular place I've pictured in drawing the strip was a seedy carry-out called Royal Foods that sold hamburger aged to the color of deep red brick. Flies available at no extra charge.

 A certain amount of Urban Decay lends character to a historic neighborhood, but this was just plain decrepit.

The real Royal Foods was a significant departure from the comic strip. If anything sexual ever happened at Royal Foods, it would have been just plain smarmy, not raunchy.

It just shows that a little bit of reality in the hands of a fiction writer-- especially a cartoonist -- is a dangerous thing.
